Aracena changes completely with the seasons. Here's an honest month-by-month guide to help you choose the right time for your visit.
The best months to visit Aracena are March to May and October to November. Spring brings wildflowers and green hills. Autumn brings mushroom season, chestnuts, and the start of the matanza (pig slaughter) season.
Cold and quiet. Temperatures can drop below freezing at night. Very few tourists. Some restaurants may have reduced hours. But the mountains are amazing, and this is peak season for seeing the dehesas at their most atmospheric.
The best time for most visitors. Temperatures are mild (15-25°C), the hills are green, wildflowers blanket the meadows, and the walking is superb. Easter week (Semana Santa) brings festivals but also more visitors.
Honest advice: avoid July and August if you can. Temperatures regularly exceed 40°C. Walking is uncomfortable or dangerous in the heat. The trees turns brown and dry. Spanish families come for August holidays, so accommodation fills up.
Still hot, but the worst is over. The first rains start to turn the land green again! A good month if you want warmth without the extremes of summer.
Many locals consider autumn the best season. Mushroom foraging begins. Chestnuts fall. The Feria del Jamón (Jamón Festival) usually takes place in late October. The colours are extraordinary.
Cool and festive. Christmas markets in the plaza. Fewer visitors than autumn. A peaceful, atmospheric time to visit if you don't mind short days.
Come in spring for nature. Come in autumn for food. Avoid midsummer unless you truly love the heat. And know that even in the quietest months, Aracena has something to offer.
