Zufre

A Balcony Over the Northern Hills

Zufre stretches along a high ridge above a landscape of reservoirs, oak pasture and distant hills. The historic centre is best explored slowly, following its narrow lanes to viewpoints and the parish church before heading out into the open countryside. Its position makes it a natural place to pause between the western Sierra and the foothills leading towards Seville.

What to See & Do

Torre de la Harina : A 12th-century defensive tower on the old Almohad wall, with panoramic views over the sierra. Cortado de Zufre : A natural viewpoint over the Rivera del Buerba valley and the reservoir. Iglesia Parroquial de la Purísima Concepción : A 16th-century church built over an earlier Gothic-Mudéjar temple. Ayuntamiento de Zufre : A 16th-century Renaissance town hall attributed to Hernán Ruiz II, with Mudéjar touches. Embalse de Zufre : The reservoir below the village, popular for fishing and birdwatching.

Fair & Pilgrimage

Zufre's calendar peaks in late summer with a two-part pilgrimage to and from its patroness's mountain sanctuary. Feria y Romería de la Virgen del Puerto (late August–September 11) : The Virgin's image is brought down from her sanctuary in the Sierra de la Vicaria on the last Sunday of August, entering town behind a traditional horse race through the streets; a four-day fair with novenas and verbenas follows, and on the second Sunday of September the image is carried back, with riders completing three ceremonial turns on horseback around the sanctuary in thanks.
