In a folded green valley between Aracena and Alájar, Linares de la Sierra rewards slow exploration. Patterned stone llano thresholds turn the entrances of whitewashed homes into open-air folk art, while steep cobbled lanes reveal a remarkably coherent historic centre. Visit the church, fountain-washhouse and village bullring, then follow old paths into oak pasture and chestnut country.

What to See & Do

Stone doorways ("llanos") : Decorative mosaic thresholds in geometric and animal motifs found outside almost every house, turning the streets into an open-air folk-art museum. Fuente Nueva : A circular fountain and washhouse where residents still hand-wash clothes in spring water. Plaza del Ayuntamiento : Home to a large "Rose of the Winds" mosaic and the village's civic centre. Plaza Principal : The main square, which doubles as an informal bullring during festivities.

Holy Week Traditions

Linares's most distinctive tradition is a Holy Week custom tied to its 16th-century brotherhood rather than a summer fair. Semana Santa y Rifa del Piñonate : Processions run from the Church of San Juan Bautista on Holy Thursday and Good Friday, organised by the Hermandad Sacramental founded in 1560. On Easter Sunday, locals raffle off piñonate, a traditional sweet made with honey and olive oil, at tables around the village to fund the brotherhood for the year.
